Camping in Abu Dhabi: The Al Quaa Guide

Where to camp near Abu Dhabi under a real dark sky, when to go, and what to pack — with Al Quaa as the star.

Al Quaa is one of the best desert camping sites near Abu Dhabi, combining soft dunes with the darkest sky in the UAE — so you can camp and see the Milky Way in one night. The most comfortable seasons are October to April. You can camp independently (with a 4x4 and full kit) or join a guided overnight camping or glamping trip.

Why camp at Al Quaa?

Plenty of places in the UAE offer desert camping, but few combine great dunes with genuinely dark skies. At Al Quaa you get both: a classic Abu Dhabi desert night and a naked-eye Milky Way overhead. Wake up to sunrise over the dunes and you have the complete experience.

Best time to camp near Abu Dhabi

The comfortable camping season in the UAE is roughly October to April, when nights are cool rather than hot. If your priority is the Milky Way, note the core is best from April to September — so late spring and early autumn (April, September, October) can offer a sweet spot of tolerable temperatures and a visible core. Desert nights are cold year-round, so always pack warm layers.

Camping vs glamping

CampingClassic tent set-up, bonfire, BBQ, telescope session, sunrise. Great value and adventure.
GlampingFurnished tent with comfortable bedding and upgraded private facilities. Same stargazing, more comfort — ideal for couples and families.

What to bring desert camping

  • Warm layers, a jacket and a hat (nights are cold)
  • Closed shoes and a change of clothes
  • Plenty of water and any personal medication
  • A torch (red light preferred) and power bank
  • Camera and tripod for astrophotography

On our guided trips, tents, bedding, food, bonfire, facilities and the telescope are all provided — you just bring your layers and your camera.

Responsible desert camping

  • Never drive into soft desert alone or without 4x4 experience.
  • Carry out all rubbish — leave no trace.
  • Respect wildlife and keep noise and light low to protect the dark sky.
  • Tell someone your plans, or go with a licensed operator.
