The best time to see the Milky Way in the UAE is from April to September, on clear nights within a few days of the new moon. During these months the bright galactic core rises high enough at night to be seen with the naked eye from dark-sky sites like Al Quaa. Winter (October–March) offers crisp skies ideal for general stargazing, but the core is low or absent.
Milky Way season in the UAE
The part of the Milky Way everyone wants to see — the bright, dusty galactic core — is only above the horizon at convenient night-time hours for part of the year. If you're planning to catch the Milky Way UAE skywatchers rave about, that window runs from about April to September. Here's how the season for the Milky Way in UAE deserts breaks down:
| March – April | Core rises in the early hours; excellent pre-dawn viewing. Season begins. |
|---|---|
| May – July | Peak Milky Way season. Core is high and bright for much of the night. |
| August – September | Still excellent in the evening; core visible earlier at night. |
| October – February | Core is low or below the horizon at night. Great for constellations, planets and winter stargazing, but not the core. |
Why the moon matters most
Even in peak season, a bright moon will hide the Milky Way. Always plan around the new moon — aim for the roughly 10-night window centred on it. A full moon is wonderful for other reasons, but it floods the sky with light and washes out the galaxy.
Weather, dust and timing
The UAE sky is often clear, but summer humidity and occasional dust can soften the view. The clearest, most transparent skies often come after a light breeze clears the air. You'll also want to be well away from the horizon glow of cities — another reason Al Quaa, far from Abu Dhabi and Dubai, is ideal.
Quick planning checklist
- Pick a month between April and September for the core
- Choose a date within ~4 days of the new moon
- Check the weather for a clear, low-dust night
- Head to a dark-sky site like Al Quaa, away from city light
- Allow 20–30 minutes for your eyes to adapt to the dark
