Al Quaa is a remote desert near Al Ain in Abu Dhabi and is the best place to see the Milky Way in the UAE. On clear, moonless nights from April to September, the bright galactic core is visible to the naked eye. It's roughly a 2–2.5 hour drive from Abu Dhabi city and about 2.5–3 hours from Dubai.
What is Al Quaa?
Al Quaa — also written Al Qua'a, Al Qua or Alqua — is an area of open desert south-east of Al Ain, in the Abu Dhabi emirate of the United Arab Emirates. Because it sits far from the glow of Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Al Ain, it has some of the darkest skies in the country. That darkness is exactly what makes the Milky Way visible.
Astronomers measure sky darkness on the Bortle scale, where 1 is a perfect natural sky and 9 is an inner-city sky. Most of the UAE's cities sit at Bortle 7–9. Al Quaa is one of the few accessible places that gets dark enough to reveal the structure of our galaxy overhead.
Can you really see the Milky Way at Al Quaa?
Yes. On a clear night around the new moon, the Milky Way's core is visible to the naked eye — a pale band of light arching across the sky, brightest towards the constellation Sagittarius. Through a telescope or a long-exposure camera, the detail is extraordinary: dust lanes, star clusters and nebulae. It is the single best Milky Way spot near Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Whether you search for it as Milky Way Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Milky Way, Milky Way Dubai or simply Milky Way UAE, the answer is the same place: Al Quaa. As the darkest place in UAE that is still easy to reach, it's where residents and visitors come to see the Milky Way in UAE skies at its brightest.

When is the best time to see the Milky Way at Al Quaa?
Two things decide whether you'll see the galaxy: the season and the moon.
- Season: The bright galactic core is above the horizon at night from roughly April to September in the UAE. This is "Milky Way season".
- Moon: Go within a few days of the new moon. A bright moon washes out the fainter stars, so a dark, moonless sky is essential.
- Weather: You need a clear sky. Dust and humidity can reduce visibility, so we watch the forecast.

Where is Al Quaa & how do you get there?
Al Quaa sits in the desert near Al Ain (you'll sometimes see it searched as Al Quaa Al Ain or Al Qua Abu Dhabi). It's in the Abu Dhabi emirate, and the Al Quaa desert is the dark-sky area our trips head into.
| Region | Desert south-east of Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, UAE |
|---|---|
| From Abu Dhabi city | Approx. 2 – 2.5 hours by car |
| From Dubai | Approx. 2.5 – 3 hours by car |
| From Al Ain | Approx. 1.5 – 2 hours by car |
| Vehicle | Sedan on tarmac; 4x4 recommended for the final desert stretch |
| Easiest option | Book a guided trip with pickup — no driving or navigation needed |
The last part of the journey leaves the paved road for soft desert, which is why many visitors prefer to book a guided tour with pickup from Abu Dhabi or Dubai. If you self-drive, a 4x4 and desert-driving experience are strongly recommended, and you should never head into the desert alone at night.
What can you do at Al Quaa?
- Stargazing & astronomy: naked-eye Milky Way, planets and constellations, often with a telescope and a guide.
- Astrophotography: long-exposure shots of the galactic core over the dunes.
- Desert camping & glamping: spend the whole night out and catch sunrise over the dunes.
- BBQ & bonfire: dinner under the stars, the classic desert night.
Tips for visiting Al Quaa

- Let your eyes adapt to the dark for 20–30 minutes; avoid white phone light (use red light).
- Bring plenty of water, and never rely on a single vehicle in the desert.
